What Happens After a DUI Crash Involving Property Damage in Kentucky?

When a crash involves suspected impairment in Kentucky, law enforcement begins a detailed investigation at the scene. This may include field sobriety tests, breath or blood testing, and interviews with witnesses.

If impairment is confirmed, charges such as DUI, wanton endangerment, or criminal mischief may be filed, especially if the crash put others at risk or caused significant damage.

In situations where a building or business is involved, the impact goes beyond the initial collision. Property owners may need to secure the structure, arrange for inspections, and begin repairs. This can sometimes lead to temporary closures or disruptions, depending on the extent of the damage.

Insurance companies are usually involved on multiple sides. The driver’s auto insurance may be reviewed to determine what coverage applies, while the business owner may also rely on their own commercial policy.

There may also be follow-up investigations, including documentation of the crash scene, repair estimates, and any surveillance footage from nearby cameras. All of this can factor into both the legal process and insurance claims.

Claims can take time, particularly if there are questions about liability or the extent of damages.

For those affected, keeping records such as photos, reports, and communication with insurers, can help make the process more manageable. While these situations can be complex, understanding how the investigation and claims process typically unfold can provide some direction in the aftermath.

An attorney can also review the details of the case to identify all potential sources of insurance coverage and ensure that those affected can pursue the full compensation needed for their recovery.
